AHA and BHA peels can be a great way to slough off dead skin for a brighter, younger looking complexion. Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) peels use glycolic, lactic, or mandelic acid to target dark spots and fine lines. Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) peels, like salicylic acid, are oil-soluble and are best for chemically exfoliating oily skin and removing blackheads. If you have ever had one of these superficial chemical peels (or even a bad sunburn), then you know just how miserable your face can feel. The redness, the peeling– it makes you not even want to wash your face.

To treat post-peel skin, I make this soothing clay mask with aloe, lavender essential oil and a touch of coconut oil. Like my coconut oil, aloe and lavender essential oil cream for sunburns, this gentle mask soothes while lightly exfoliating.

Kaolin clay, or white clay, is a great choice for dry or sunburned skin. It gently draws out toxins but does not absorb oil as harshly as bentonite clay. Kaolin clay is known for its soothing benefits and ability to remove impurities from the skin.

I love using lavender essential oil when I am making a skin care recipe for sensitive skin. There is some evidence that lavender oil can be effective in treating burns because of its analgesic properties. Like any other product that you are using on your skin, you should always do a spot test if you are new to essential oils. To reduce any skin irritation, do not apply lavender oil directly to your skin without a carrier oil.

Combine 1 tsp of kaolin clay of 2 tsp of distilled water. If you need a quick recipe for making distilled water, check out this post .

Mix thoroughly until the clay dissolves in the water. It will look like you added way too much water, but don’t worry. The aloe will thicken the mixture considerably.

Add 2 drops of lavender essential oil. I have a lot of Young Living oils lying around, but if you are looking to spend less for great quality, I always recommend Eden’s Garden.

Stir in about an ounce of aloe vera gel and mix until thickened. If desired, add a couple of drops of room temperature cold pressed coconut oil.

Apply the soothing clay mask with a mask brush or a stiff foundation brush. I recommend doing a thin layer so that it dries evenly. Leave the mask on for about 20 minutes and gently rinse.

This mask is gentle enough to use 2-3 times a week.
